Reinventing kayaking with Nicky T-boy - Jacob F

Over the last couple years whitewater freestyle kayaking has been grinding to a halt. Recently there haven't been any huge developments/advancements in retrospect to 10 years ago. "I'd say the latest notable advancement in freestyle would be combo tricks which probably started happening 3-4 years ago  (linking 2+ tricks on a wave)" - Tyler Curtis (a legend in freestyle). I Personally think that watching the same 12 tricks every day can get a little lame. Don't get me wrong its super cool learning and doing massive air blunts or pan-ams, but I feel that the constant trick repetition will bore me. While sitting in a rather large line at Garberator I brought up these concerns to one of our coaches Nick Troutman, he surprised me when he said that he had the same thoughts when he was my age and that he invented multiple tricks, for example: Phoenix Woo, Freeslide, 540 helix, back airscrew and may more. however he was deterred from learning and perfecting these tricks because he didn't want to waist time on moves that don't count in competition. This is something thats been in the back of my mind for a couple days now, I think that if ICF would recognize a larger variety of moves it would take kayaking to the next level. It would be really fun watching all the pros have to take time to learn a whole set of new tricks in order to remain on the podium which allow for a more competitive environment. in general I plan on trying to learn theres new tricks as a help to progress kayaking and grow the sport. its also been super cool watching nick try all these tricks again and we've already had some people asking what we were doing on the wave!
