Not so swift rescues By Trey Abbott
One of the requirements for Keeners is to complete a swift water rescue course, they offer one here if you haven't taken one yet. I hadn't taken a SWR course so I took the one at keeners, while in the course we had many funny fails. One of them was by me, I thought I could hand paddle over the pour-over we were working in and on top of the hand paddling I thought that I could also free-wheel the drop. Of course it didn't work and turned out to be more of a back deck roll where I hit both elbows funny bones simultaneously and the person who was supposed to pull me out of the pour-over couldn't do it very well so I was under water for longer then needed, basically it sucked but was super fun. Another fail was when Ginger was acting as the live bait in one of our rescue drills he was supposed to swim up to the pour-over and grab his partner and someone on the rope was supposed to pull him out but instead he kept swimming up to Lotte and not grabbing her and in turn getting pulled under water. This happened about four or five times until Lotte, who rarely ever swims pulls her skirt and swims. Even then he forgot about rescuing her for another fifteen seconds so she saved herself and he eventually got her boat. The point of these stories are to tell about how hard SWR can be and also how much fun it is when you are just practicing.
