One of many things I learned to do here at Keeners is just do it! As kayakers we always face this gut wrenching feeling before we do something typically because we are nervous. Then again I have experienced it also because I ate something too soon before paddling but that's besides the point. When you see the perfect opportunity to try something that scares you and it's safe you should definitely do it just overcoming this feeling for some can be difficult.
Here on the Ottawa there's the Mccoys rapid which has the almighty Phil's Hole. We actually drop into Phil's intentionally on every Thursday as part of the Keener program. One of the hardest things to do is to commit yourself knowing the fact you're probably not going to be in control. Since there's nothing to worry about majorly if you swim it's the perfect place to get totally trashed. Spots like this are the perfect place to try something you never done before. My best advice for trying something out of your comfort zone is to put yourself into the situation and deal with it instead of worrying. If there are actual features that can endanger your life it's a bit different.
Next time you're in a safe environment with the right crew in a rapid like Phil's don’t be afraid to give it a shot. You will probably find it to be a lot of fun.
