Nose Plugs - Brook

Nose plugs are one of the most important pieces of gear that you can take on the river. Many non-kayakers think that nose plugs are for wimps that can't take a little water up their nose. Many kayakers think they're too much of a hassle and too uncomfortable to use on the river. Here's why they are all wrong. It might be true that beginner paddlers use them simply to keep water out of their nose, but any experienced paddler knows the real reason nose plugs are vital: they keep away sinus infections.

Last year I experienced this up close and personal. At Keeners, I didn't use nose plugs, and I payed the price. I suffered from a sinus infection for the rest of the summer after leaving Keeners. Believe me, it sucked. Since then, I have worn nose plugs every rapid since then, and my nose is dry and clear. Even though they look stupid, can be a hassle, and they're uncomfortable, sinus infections are so much worse.
