The first week of keeners has been awesome with varying water levels and different waves coming in. We had some of the best instructors in the world and all improved massively. I have personally improved a lot and learned many new skills on and off the water. We had world class waves like chopping block, horseshoe (right and left side), babyface, pushbutton, infinity wave, almost garburator, and best of all (in my opinion) corner wave.
Corner wave is one of the most difficult and frustrating but also one of the best and most fun waves on the river. Some days this wave can be foamy, steep and amazing, other days corner wave is a frustrating and bouncy green wave. At all levels this wave is a great place to improve as a kayaker and have a great time. It is the best place to perfect your tricks and learn exactly what you need to do and how you should do it. If you can do a trick on this wave you can do it on most other waves on the river. The eddy of corner wave is very difficult to obtain over and over again, you will have do a short walk back up.
Good tips for corner wave:
- when catching the eddy go in facing the far right downstream, it is much easier than ferrying into the eddy
-left spins are super easy and fun on this wave, also super easy to clean up, the faster you throw your head around the faster the spin
- the wave is slanted to the right so right blunts/roundhouses are easier than left
- when setting up on the wave carve or spin to the top then drive down the wave with speed, use the first bounce to throw on instead of the second
- when throwing a right blunt or roundhouse, angle your boat to 10-11 o clock for easier blunts and maximum air
-find something upstream to fix your eyes on and look at non stop when surfing
- put all of your energy into getting on the wave because you can't throw tricks if you don't catch the wave
- stay very aggressive while surfing it because you can get flushed off the back and right side easily
- don't be afraid to try new things on the wave it is great for learning
-most importantly HAVE FUN because you are on an amazing wave on one of the best rivers in the world
Also huge thanks to my parents for sending me to keeners a second time!
