I have been kayaking for around five years. Both my parents had some history with kayaking, canoeing, river tripping, slalom, sea kayaking, and creeking. From a young age, I was playing around in my little play boat, on flat water. I ran my first rapid when I was 8 or 9, and I began my slalom training club in Ottawa, on the pumphouse, around that age. The pumphouse is a solid class 2 rapid, maybe a little trickier in areas. I began with some summer camps, and a session or two every week. There were never many kids, always under five, so we got lots of attention. The camps and lessons were run by the Ottawa River Runners, and we rotated many nice, and professional coaches. We did pool sessions in the winter, and I eventually got my roll. Later our coaches got more predictable, and it was cut to only one or two. I got more and more into kayaking, and we started doing both pool sessions and gym and ergometer sessions. A few years ago, my family bought a cottage on the put in to the Ottawa River, the home of the Keener program. Now, I race slalom, and train three times a week, and during the summer I come up to my cottage. Now that I'm old enough, I'm doing the Keener program, and I'm improving my whitewater skills so I can be a better freestyle paddler, and a better slalom paddler, and a better river runner.
Yay Olivia, nice pushbutton Surf!
