Edging- Luke Pomeroy

Edging is one of the most important skills in freestyle kayaking, it is a basic skill which takes a long time to master, in keeners we practice this daily on the water. This skill is learned on day 1 in any kayaking class or program. From first time learning how to ferry and don't edge properly you will flip over and just the same when you are going for a huge back airscrew you can edge the wrong way and get tumbled. It is essential to every manoeuvre or trick in freestyle kayaking and all kayaking in general. Even something which seems so simple to us like catching an eddy or front surfing is nearly impossible to anyone with little edge control and will lead to a glorious fail.
Good ways to practice and master edging are:
Lean cleans in the flatwater which force you to know how to properly switch from edge to edge.
Simple forward paddling with as much edge as possible
Carving back and forth on a wave or grinding in varying amounts and learning how to on different waves
Trying to do new tricks which make your really think about how you should edge, how much you should, when and where on the wave you do it and transfer edges.
Overall this is a very important skill for anyone who wants to become a better kayaker.
