Why do keeners have speech night? - Andrew Palim

At keeners every Monday night all twenty something of us pile into a small conference room in the upstairs of the Wilderness Tours rafter’s resort. Not to review video or plan future kayaking excursions, but to work on our public speaking skills. Why, might you ask, would a teen kayaking camp require all of its participants to make a speech every Monday night? Not only is it fun, helps keeners get to know each other and plays to the overall keener theme of encountering and conquering your fears it’s also an extremely important skill that can take you far beyond the whitewater world. Skills practiced in speech night can be useful in almost every job both in and out of the industry, from kayak instruction to practicing law. And as Anna and Steveo always remind us, you can be the smartest and have the best ideas in the room, but if you can’t communicate them, no one will know.
