Race day on the Ottawa!- Leo Richards

This Wednesday I had the chance to experience my first race day with the keener program, and it was amazing. Before getting on the water, we were divided into teams. We started the day up at McCoy’s rapid. This first race had three legs: the first leg started at the top of McCoy’s and paddled through satler’s tongue to high five second leg. The next leg started from the left shore in the same Eddy, ferried across the current to touch the right shore, and paddled back to the lower eddy on river left (the football eddy) to high five one of the coaches. Next, the third leg rescued the kayak of their first leg (who had to flip on purpose in the football eddy) and brought it to shore so the first leg could collect their rescued kayak and high five another coach to finish the Race. Our second race took place farther downriver, at the Lorne. We had to race down the rapid all the way to the WT lunch site. That one was definitely my favourite race. Next, for the third race, we had to individually race across and down push button. This one wasn’t as exciting as the others, but it was a good opportunity to test our speed. And finally, for our last race, we separated into teams of two. This race took place at the Norman’s and coliseum rapids. The first leg paddled through Norman’s, and the second leg paddled from the bottom of Norman’s down coliseum. This race was also pretty fun. All in all, it was a great day!
