C-dub— The legendary Corner wave! - Ethan Frangenberg

If you’ve ever been wave surfing, you’ll know that they are fun, bouncy, and can sometimes serve you on a silver platter. But have you surfed Corner Wave? No matter how many waves you’ve been on, if you haven’t surfed it, people will be asking you what you’ve been on lately. Basically, even if you surf stakeout waves, you are a noob if you haven’t surfed Corner Wave and been presented with the opportunity.

This wave is unique in the sense that it is somehow completely vertical and no foam pile exists on the wave at all. It is also super steep, but pearling is more rare than worlds being on a wave (mmmhmmm...ICF...mmmmhmmm)! Since Corner Wave curls away from the eddy, towards the river left, right tricks go very big, and some left tricks can work as well.

So, you may be thinking, “how do I surf it?” Chill. Don’t get ahead of yourself. You have to catch it first. Like many good waves, Corner Wave is not low hanging fruit. It requires work. A lot of force, and a lot of distance (cumulatively, that is). To line up the catch, there will be a small pour-over, approximately 5 inches tall, and a hump just to the right of it. These features create a lane of sorts, through which you can paddle, pulling yourself up onto some small boils. If you do so correctly, minimal paddling is needed to catch the wave. If not, go to plan b. Plan b is to crank as hard as possible on your paddle and push your boat onto the curler. Also, a pro tip, push your feet down and lean back while catching it to bring yourself onto the wave.

To cycle on Corner Wave, carve to the top of the wave and simultaneously move player’s right, then throw the trick to your liking (he paddle twirl is my go-to move).

Yay! You threw a trick! But, oh no! You flushed! Most of the current coming off C-dub is going either straight at the football eddy, island, or left of left side horseshoe. Instead of panicking and pulling your skirt, ignore everything you’ve learned ever about ferry angle, point directly at the shore, and paddle hard towards the left. If you miss it, experience the magic of left or right side horseshoe, or just run the tongue. (Right side horseshoe is not recommended if you want to keep your legs, arms, face, and humanity intact).
If you miss the eddy, you must do ten push-ups when you come back up! Either way, you will get fit by surfing here, and have fun!
