How teaching/coaching helps with progression of your own skills.- Ethan
On the receiving end, coaching can be very beneficial to you since you are learning new information to better your skills. However, on the giving end, other than helping with soft skill and communication, coaching has other benefits to it. It is said that the best way to retain knowledge is to teach, since it forces a person to recall said knowledge, and structure it in a way to accurately depict it in a manner that will allow for understanding. Essentially, by teaching a skill, you will get better at it yourself! I found this to be true one day at Garburator. I got tired and decided to get out of my boat to rest and coach others. I found that after teaching Patrick and Finnian how to properly airscrew, I was sticking my own more and more! Yay!
So what exactly happened?
What happened was as I explained the trick and watched People try it, I realized small mistakes in my own as I replayed them through my head to convert it to words to coach. This way, moments before I did the trick on the wave, I was able to arise key points in my head such as “ left, throw lap, snap,” which translates to “point your bow left, throw down and back with your paddle on your lap, and hip-snap up.” All of this helped me perfect my airscrew. As the saying goes, “he who can, does. He who cannot, teaches.” And while this typically means ‘he who no more can, teaches’ in my mind it means ‘in order to learn, teach.’
That’s all folks!!!!!!
