Female empowerment in the kayaking community by Sophie Gilfillan
When I started an intro to kayaking course 2 years ago I was in a girls only group with one other girl. The point of this course was to try and get more girls into the sport. Flash forward to today I have one other girl who paddles with me on the Ontario development team. Right now I am at keeners session three with 4 other girls and 18 other boys. Growing up in this sport I have grown used to being surrounded by boys. However no matter who Im paddling with weather it’s a boy, girl or neither I am always guaranteed to have a fun time. The only problem I have with the lack of girls in the sport is that I feel as though so many girls are missing out due to the fact that they are one of very few. For one I know that paddling brings out the best of me no matter who I’m paddling with, but to a girl who is just being introduced to the sport may feel left out or alone. I am here to say to all those girls out there you are not alone. Kayaking is such a friendly inclusive sport and no matter what skill level, age or gender you are you will always get off the water with a smile and a story to tell.
