When kayaking swimming is sometimes unavoidable. Inorder to make swimming safe there are techniques to help reduce injury or danger. If you find yourself swimming towards a log follow these steps to remain as safe as possible:
Swim around the log if possible
If swimming around is NOT possible go on your back feet forward and slow yourself down as much as possible by doing a jelly fish like motion.
As you near the log put your feet up and get ready to hit the log with your feet.
As soon as your feet make contact with the log donor bend your legs much, the straighter your legs are the better and more success you will experience with this technique.
As you hit the log you must also arch your back and put your hands down by your side and cup your hands. This allows you to “surf”.
Once stable walk yourself across the log and once close enough to shore stand up and get to shore safely.
This technique can help keep you safe when you get in an unsafe or uncomfortable position near a log.
