The flat water chill is an underwhelming yet majestic move that is best practiced on hot weekend days at Keeners, to cool off and relax.
In order to accomplish the flat water chill, it is recommended to have the following:
- A solid hand roll, or a friend to spot you
- A nose plug
- The ability to hold your breath for a decent period of time
- A friend to play the bongos on the underside of your kayak (optional but recommended.)
The first step on the way to your standard flat water chill is to chuck your paddle (hence the need for a hand roll), put on your nose plug, and flip your kayak. You can then relax, and let your arms drift freely beneath your boat, grab the bow or stern of the kayak, or simply fold your arms into your chest and stretch your back. Whatever your style, the flat water chill is guaranteed to keep you cool during the sweltering summer days we've been having. It's the relaxed, calm vibes of yoga without needing to be particularly flexible or taking too much time out of your day. In addition to this, practicing the flat water chill can help you improve your ability to hold your breath and keep calm under water.
Though the flat water chill is a majestic, wonderful paddling move, it does have risks. Beware of concerned passers-by mistaking your flipped boat for a paddler in trouble (as has happened to me in the past). Also keep an eye out for friends seeking to practice their loop by hopping your overturned boat.
