How to survive your first big water beat down Thursday- Alex Lambrecht

If you're anything like me, the Ottawa river is whitewater like you've never experienced before. I am very lucky to live near some of the best whitewater in the world in Asheville North Carolina, but big water is something that we definitely don't have. Needless to say, coming into keeners I was terrified of the huge waves and holes, and when bwbdt (big water beat down Thursday) came around I didn't even know what to think. Dropping into my Phills on that first Thursday I fully knew it would be my first ever real beat down, but I had no idea just how big it would be. If you really want to survive your first beat down, you really just need to accept what happens. It's okay if you swim, or if you barely even get beat down, but the important thing is to have a ton of fun no matter what. When you're dropping in, just focus on basically any hazards or places you don't want to be, and enjoy bring anywhere and everywhere else. In the hole, it's just you and the water, and really it's just luck whether you get beat down heavily or just surf out. At he end of the day, you get to watch everyone get destroyed on Steve-O's drone and judge to see who had the best. It's a scary moment for sure, but in the end it's all worth it and it's something you get to remember for the rest of when you first get here a lot of people will be super excited about big water beat down Thursday, but you probably won't be. However, after your first one it will be the day of the week that you most look forward to over even compitition Friday and the weekend free days.
