Today was big water beat down!
That means that you just go into something big like a hole and just hope for the best.
The goal of this keeners event is to fail, you don’t want to succeed in doing tricks, the only thing you want to succeed in is rolling back up and staying in the feature.
Here are some tips on getting a great beat down
How to- Step 1 Get really scared at a big water feature
Step 2 Drop into it
Step 3 Ride it out until you flip
Step 4 Roll and paddle back into feature
Step 5 Repeat steps 3&4 until you flush
A great example is Phils hole on the Ottawa River right-side or left-side, your choice. Then let yourself drift into it and get trashed. But one very important rule always have fun. To succeed on this you have to have no control whatsoever. Just fall in and have a blast.
There are some big reasons we do this. We don’t just do this for any rhyme or reason, we do this because it prepares us for when we do accidently get caught in a feature, we are ready. Also it creates rescue situations in a controlled environment. So big water beat down, helps us get over our fears, prepares us for self rescue, prepares other keeners for helping as well, and helps us nuke proof our roll. So not only is it fun but it trains us for many different situations in kayaking.
Signing off and paddle safe
