4th of July... In Canada? by Hank Boyd
Here's the thing about the 4th of July; it's an American holiday. Because of this fact, the 4th of July becomes slightly awkward when you try to celebrate it in Canada. Our America Day at Keeners was very normal and frankly anticlimactic, but don't get me wrong, it was just as fun as any other day. The only difference was that while I checked my friends Facebook and Instagram posts of giant parades with friends or fireworks and a cookout with family I had either just gotten off the river, watching Lilo and Stitch, or doing both of those things at the same time. This was of course frustrating. Here I am watching Lilo and Stitch with all the Canadians of the group screaming "'Murica!!!", and arguing with a few Americans about which was better: America or Canada, hockey or soccer, and whether or not baseball is a legitimate sport. I had to do something patriotic! It came to about 10:30 p.m. and nothing patriotic had happened when finally we decided to make a bonfire and light sparklers. This only lasted for about 30 minutes until it started to rain but hey we got to do something! Although there was no cookout or American flag, it was good enough! Overall the 4th of July was a success here at Keeners.
