The Ottawa river is a world class river for playboating because of its unique features at every level. Another reason novice and veteran paddlers alike are drawn to it is because of its lack of consequences in the main features.
At keeners they encourage you to go into some pretty meaty hydraulics and waves that may seem like they would put a paddler who may not have strong surfing skills in a precarious situation. But despite the intimidating look of these rapids and features they are really not gonna do much more than toss you around while you’re in your boat. So with all this being said you can see why you should not hesitate to try something that is maybe way out of your comfort zone. Throwing yourself into these new and scary situations is an amazing way to progress quickly and to become much more comfortable if you are ever in a pinch where if you swim in a hole you may not come out as easily as Phil’s or maybe you need to surf a wave like Kahuna to get to the other side of the river to avoid a nasty drop. So when you come to keeners make sure that you try whatever trick you were thinking of into that giant hole or maybe try to hang on for a little longer while you’re tumbling in phil’s, because you have nothing to lose by doing so.
Make sure that you try everything (that was deemed safe by the coaches) so that you can bring out the best in yourself.
Thank you.
Joe
