Last week of Session 1!

Hello readers of the Keener blogs... :)

The last week of session 1 has begun, a fact that brings a frown to my face as I think of my departing fellow kayakers, but I am also hugely excited about finally getting to kayak with Keeners next session! This week I'm with the intermediates, and so it is a step up from what I've been doing. I feel the improvement every day. I am finally surfing waves... it is so fun! Have yet to learn the tricks but my white water roll is pretty solid, as is my hand roll. I have definitely progressed psychologically - no longer am I afraid (usually) of what nature has to offer me! "What's the worst that could happen?" I think to myself. I never pictured myself looking forward to the morning basics including forward and back strokes, etc, but now I find myself enjoying every exercise more as I know that I will benefit from every seemingly tedious activity.

As the days go by, I also notice how paddling has become more natural to me. I no longer stop to think before I ferry across a current nor do I panic if I capsize. I am quite happy to have spent several weeks kayaking with Brenna, Kalob, Katie, James and Keegan as they are all really good paddlers and are always very supportive. Being acquainted and getting along with so many instructors reassures me when I'm on the river, as well as off the river, as I know that there are many positive influences I can look up to or simply talk to if ever I need advice.

Every staff member is very approachable! I got Ben Marr's autograph today, so that's one goal for this week completed! He asked me if I was serious when I asked for it. (He's quite modest.) In terms of life off the water, last night was our last speech night. Joe gave us a very inspirational speech that sent shivers through me and left me speechless. His and other staff members' words always make me realize how fortunate I am to be here. It has truly been an amazing experience.

Though I have spent several weeks on the same river, every day is full of surprises, on and off the water. The atmosphere is always great. I am super happy and lucky to get another session here! My skills will develop a lot and I hope to overall become a better person! I already feel that I am not as lazy as I was before. The obligatory chores and early wake ups have highlighted how short life is and how one must try his best in everything he does. Spending weeks in the sun, enjoying expert guidance and great rapids is without a doubt the best way for kayakers to spend their summer. Stay tuned and make sure to read what the other Keeners have to say!
