How to Set Up a Hammock - Alec Jansujwicz

Hammocks have become an essential part of my gear when I travel anywhere for kayaking. They are small enough to fit anywhere in the back of my car or in my suitcase. I chose an ENO Doublenest for both chilling out and for camping use. The size gives me more room to spread out when sleeping or a place to hang with a friend. Setting up an ENO Doublenest can be complicated until one becomes used to it.
  1. Find two sturdy trees (remember you have to support your weight for extended periods of time) 6-12 feet apart.
  2. Begin by wrapping hammock straps around each tree. I use 9 foot NRS cam straps for the ease of adjusting the length to fit different sized trees.
  3. Take out hammock and clip to straps with the opening end of the carabiner facing the ground to reduce the chance of accidentally slipping out.
  4. If camping, wrap bug net and rain tarp around hammock. I use the ENO Guardian SL net and FastFly rain tarp. Both pieces of gear are the most lightweight offering from the brand and save weight in my pack when camping. The tarp only requires two stakes, which can be made by whittling sticks found on site.
  5. Remember to camp responsibly, leave no trace, and never cook or use flame near your hammock.
  6. Enjoy!
