How To have Fun In Whirlpools- Ben Atherton

Through strong currents and very specific rock formations, large whirlpools can form on high volume rivers like the Ottawa. In rapids like chopping block, whirlpools can form which are large enough to submerge an entire kayak for extended periods of time. Purposefully getting beaten down in the whirlpools can be terrifying, but if you do it right it is one of the most fun things to do on the river. Here are some tips on how to have more fun while underwater in whirlpools.

1. Focus on Breathing- Before you drop into the whirlpool, make sure that you have slowed down your breathing. This will allow you to hold your breath comfortably for much longer periods of time. Also, make sure that you get one good breath before you drop in.

2. Don't fight the whirlpools- Allowing the whirlpools to control you will relax your body and take away most of the panic and fear.

3. Start Small- If you drop right into the most massive whirlpool on your first ride, there is a good chance that you will be too scared to go again.

4. Control the Spin- Keeping a paddle blade in the water can keep the rotation of your boat at the same speed as the rotation of the whirlpool, which will keep you upright.
