How to do an Airscrew- Ben Atherton

Throwing an airscrew is one of the most impressive and entertaining things that you can do on a wave. In short, an airscrew is basically an aerial barrel roll on a wave.  The airscrew must take off and land within 15 degrees of straight on the wave and must get air at some point.  The first skill you will need to do an airscrew is a back deck roll. The airscrew is somewhat of a back deck roll in mid air. First you will need a fast moving wave that can provide large bounces and is fairly easy to surf.  Once on the wave you should carve to the edge in order to get on the top of the foam pile.  Then, you must accelerate down the wave to get a bounce. Edge your boat hard to one side as you bounce and simultaneously lean onto the back of the boat on the opposite side that you edged.  Once you are in the air you need to stay all the back until your boat completes the full rotation. If you perform these steps correctly you should be able to do an airscrew.
