Embracing the beat down By Matt white

After two week on the Ottawa river the levels had finally dropped to the level where Phil’s hole was in. On Thursday we surfed right side Phil’s to practice getting beat down in a safe manor. Some of the beat downs were spectacular to watch with mine lasting over a minute. This morning of beat downs set the day in motion as we headed for the main channel. One group stayed at the Lorne while the rest of us went to the whirlpools that were down stream. These beat downs are like no other as they can last for 10-30 seconds depending on the size. It is a spectacular sight to witness as the swirling water sucks the kayak down and spins it. The crowning jewel of Thursday was running main line Coliseum as this is a massive rapid with 4 huge waves that will flip a kayak with ease. But the feeling of accomplishment after you run it upright makes Thursday one of the best days in the keener week.
