How to do a kickflip:
Though not a typical freestyle move, the kickflip is a great downriver trick for all those looking to spice up their river running. The kickflip can be achieved in both playboats and larger kayaks, and prerequisite knowledge of a back deck roll is recommended.
A strictly technical definition of a kickflip would describe a 360° aerial barrel roll off the crest of a wave. However, as with most freestyle moves, the kickflip is perhaps better broken down into smaller steps for maximum understanding and success.
Step 1: Pick your wave- The ideal kickflipping wave is fairly steep, with little to no foam pile. As with many moves, the larger the wave, the bigger you can go (more air).
Step 2: Increase speed- Accelerate as you approach the wave- be sure to move faster than the downstream current.
Step 3: Initiate the kickflip! This can be achieved using a final forward stroke as you crest the wave, lifting the bow as high as possible. Take the stroke on the same side you intend to throw on.
Step 4: Kickflip time! - Bring the boat on edge- the same side on which you just took the initiation stroke- and throw your body back in the manner of a back deck roll, rotating the boat above you. Ideally, you should finish upright just below the wave.
Step 5: Claim your ride! - In typical keener tradition, salute a stunning success or spectacular failure with whatever celebration you choose, be it throwing shrig, brown claw, or the classic war whoop. Regardless of outcome, attempting a kickflip is a sure way to stay boolin.
