"Opportunities Don't Happen You Make Them" Speech Night Topic by Frank Johnson

In keeners every Monday we all gather after dinner and have what we call speech night. The purpose this is to over come our fear of talking in front of people. Over the course of three week we have in total of three speech nights. On the first night you basically explain who you are but the second and third speech night you are given a topic with days to prepare. If you are like most of us you don't really look over your topic until you about to talk in front of everyone. In these situations I say to myself I have dropped into Phil's hole this is nothing....(this gives you at least five seconds of encouragement). Unfortunately keeners is basically nearly over and we have done our final speech night. For my final speech night I was given a very deep topic.

As I was sitting in a room full of people just about to go up in front of everyone I kept reading my topic in my head nearly panicking because I forgot to prepare my speech. Honestly I did pretty good for a twentyish minute preparation Anyways my topic was based on a phrase "Opportunities Don't Happen You Create Them". After giving it a thought this is literally a quote to live by. In my speech I tried to break it down the best I could without getting to nervous in front of everyone

The way I explained my speech was completely related to kayaking and makes sense. Its pretty cool relating everything to kayaking... you can even ask my teachers at my school (they probably think I am crazy). Everyone has once maybe believed life just happens and you cant control it. In reality as the quote clearly states its doesn't just happen you have to create your choices. Think about when you first got into kayaking. You took an interest in learning to roll. After countless hours of struggling
and few actual rolls you finally start getting it. From there opportunities started opening up. People started taking you down rivers and you started to break your fear boundaries only to find a love for the sport. Then the opportunities to run various rivers poped up. In the end if you didn't create a chance for yourself to learn something knew the opportunities you have wouldn't exist. Maybe you are reading this as a new kayaking or a professional but it all comes down to you doing something to get where you desire to be. Of course my topic couldn't be this simple.

Another part a I assigned to relate to the main topic was the keener motto "Give More Then You Take" and how these two work with each other. In a simple sense remember that person or hand full of people that taught you to kayak literally for free not charging you a thing? That's a clear example of some one giving there advice away without taking anything. Now sense that person took the time to teach you they have created more opportunities by just simply  giving there help.

In summary what comes around goes around. When you give more then you take you create opportunities and will be noticed. Not everything will have instant results or a glorious reward but the opportunities are there to be created.
